Session I. Glacier Monitoring and Modeling in Central Asia in times of Climate Change

This session will focus on the critical role of glacier monitoring and modeling in understanding and addressing the impacts of climate change in Central Asia. Glaciers are vital for the region’s water security, energy production, and agriculture, yet they are among the most vulnerable to rising global temperatures. The session will bring together leading scientists and practitioners to share the latest research findings, field experiences, and innovative approaches to glacier observation and modeling. Discussions will highlight recent expeditions in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, explore the integration of international scientific cooperation, and reflect on best practices for translating glacier data into policy-relevant insights. By connecting experts from GFZ, UNESCO, University of Fribourg, and WGMS, the session aims to strengthen knowledge exchange and promote collaborative efforts to support climate adaptation strategies and sustainable water management in the region.
